For our second episode of Good Talks, founder Phillip Collins met with Good Black Art alum and international rising star Akilah Watts at 1969 Gallery in New York to talk about how she's carved out her own access in the contemporary art industry, on her own terms.
Akilah Watts (b. 1996) is a Barbadian contemporary artist who earned her BFA in 2017 and went on to take part in that year's Prizm Art Fair. Working across multiple media, she's exhibited locally in Barbados and internationally in New York, San Francisco, and Miami, with features in Artsy, ArtLeadHER, Artnet, and Good Black Art. She's currently developing two new bodies of work: one exploring her relationship to natural hair and Caribbean identity, and another, "Moments From My Island Home," bridging the realistic and idealistic views of her native Barbados.
