Akilah Watts
"I am interested in depicting a black Barbadian experience and my main goal is to instill a feeling of Nostalgia and curiosity in the people who view it.Through the new space of play that I am in I wish to be able to view my work from a similar lens as well."
Akilah Watts (b. 1996) is a Barbadian contemporary artist whose work explores the Black Barbadian experience.
Akilah employs a range of media to create multiple bodies of work, exhibiting both locally in Barbados and internationally in cities such as New York, San Francisco, and Miami. In March 2019, she hosted her first solo exhibition, and in December 2021, she participated in a show at the World Trade Center in New York. Her work has also been featured in online exhibitions, auctions, and publications, including Artsy, Les Iles, and Good Black Art.
Akilah has been highlighted in local publications such as Easy Magazine and M People Magazine, as well as internationally on platforms like Artsy, ArtLeadHER, and Artnet. Currently, she is developing multiple bodies of work—one that explores her relationship with natural hair and her Caribbean heritage, and another titled Moments From My Island Home, which bridges the gap between the realistic and idealized perspectives of Barbados.
