"Using collage materials and oil paint, my practice parallels my personal experience with the experiences of my direct ancestors." Mario Joyce mines his ancestral lineage alongside his personal experience growing up in rural Ohio as a queer Black man, exploring how memories evolve over time and across generations into intricate capsules of identity, belonging, and place.

Mario's work is characterized by vintage collage materials sourced from books printed between 1965 and 1999, vibrant colors, strong lines, and heavy texture, at times incorporating soil from his childhood farm. He lives and works in Los Angeles, and his work is held in public collections including the Columbia Museum of Art and the North Dakota Museum of Art. He was one of five Good Black Art alumni spotlighted in a Black History Month partnership with Sotheby's on Instagram.
