"The Blessing" is a self-portrait I created during my residency in the home of the late Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. Taking inspiration from her work where she often has a figure with large hands that can mend, create, and console you, I exaggerate the size of my praying hands as a symbol of big blessings to come as well as the importance that my hands have to me as an artist. I use the color blue in this work as an extension to Blackness, being a creation from the cosmo, being connected to the water, in addition to being connected to the spiritual realm.
