In my series Say Their Names, I use portraiture as a tool to memorialize the numerous Trans and Non conforming victims who have passed due to white supremacy and hate crimes. After creating full portraits of each individual person, I deconstruct and recontextualize them into new, collective portraits. The collective memorial portraits convey both individual and collective losses within the Black and Brown communities. The abstraction of the work allows the victims and their families the right to opacity—to not have the victims’ lives reduced to the moment of their horrific death—and it makes evident that racism and white supremacy are persistent systemic issues.
