"I hope that future generations, including my descendants and those of people like me, can look at these colorful paintings and say, 'Black women of the 21st century were truly vibrant and full of life.'"
Muofhe Manavhela, born 2000, is a young multi-disciplinary artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a young woman navigating the modern South African landscape, Muofhe draws from the everyday experiences of Black womanhood in all its nuance and essence.
Muofhe has taken her place as a social commentator, using her art to explore the positioning of Black women in a society that misunderstands them. Her work deconstructs harmful narratives and reconstructs perceptions of Black womanhood through honesty, communicating themes of sexuality, youth, freedom, pleasure, and the domesticity of women through painting, printmaking, and embroidery.
