Muofhe Manavhela
"I hope that future generations, including my descendants and those of people like me, can look at these colorful paintings and say, 'Black women of the 21st century were truly vibrant and full of life.'"
Muofhe Manavhela, born 2000, is a young multi-disciplinary artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a young woman navigating the modern South African landscape, Muofhe lends from the everyday experiences of Black womanhood, in all its nuance and essence.
Muofhe has taken her place as a social commentator by using her art to explore the positioning of Black women in the landscape of a society that misunderstands them. Her work looks to deconstruct current and harmful narratives and reconstruct our perceptions of black womanhood through the honesty of the experiences.
Her work is vibrant and fun as well as intimate and extensive in meaning in the pursuit to communicate themes of sexuality, youth, freedom, pleasure, and the domesticity of women. She uses a variety of mediums mainly painting and printmaking.
