Mama told me
This painting is part of a series of works titled What. The artist examines the Black experience in childhood when navigating through spaces or institutions for the first time. Abdourahman was interested in addressing this topic with children as the experiences of hypervisibility and invisibility often take place when we first enter institutions. The painting portrays an image of Abdourahman's baby brother and her hand touching his face.
